Cinecittà Promoting Italian Contemporary Cinema (Filmitalia) dedicated area is taking care of organizing the Italian selections for the 52nd International Film Festival Rotterdam, which will take place in 2023 between the 25th of January and the 5th of February.
The selections will, of course, be held in Rome from November 14th to 18th 2022, and will be carried out directly by IFFR Director Vanja Kaludjercic and by Programmer Rebecca de Pas.
For what concerns the General Rules for Eligibility:
Submission to the Festival is open to feature films, documentaries and experimental films, with a minimum length of 63 minutes, as well as short films and innovative visual productions for digital media completed after 1 January 2022, which have not already been shown in The Netherlands or submitted to previous editions of the Festival. In addition, priority will be given to world and international premieres.
In particular, for what concerns The Tiger Competition section:
16 will be the chosen titles, either debut films or 2nd or 3rd works, that will be presented in World or International premiere at IFFR. Exceptions might be made for movies that have been released in Italy or during international festivals between September 2022 and January 2023.
For this section three the awards granted by the jury, the first one, the Tiger Award, worth €40.000, which will be split between the producer and the director of the project, while the second and third one, the Jury Awards, are each worth €10.000.
For the Big Screen Competition:
This section aims at promoting independent movies in The Netherlands. In this case, like for The Tiger Competition, the 16 chosen titles must be having their World or International premiere at IFFR, but exceptions might be made for films released in Italy or during international festivals no more than five months before the Festival.
The winning film will be both released in theatres and broadcasted on television in the Netherlands.
In addition, it will receive the VPRO Big Screen Award by a jury of five enthusiast festival audience members, which is worth a total of €30.000 and will be split between the director and the Dutch distributor.
Then there are five other sections:
The VriendenLoterij Audience Award section, open to all feature films that have had their first public screening after January 1st the year prior to the festival, whose prize is worth €10.000.
The Bright Future section, dedicated to debut and second features or documentaries directed by rising authors screened in world or international premiere.
The Harbour section, this year IFFR novelty, and its biggest section, which will show the full range and depth of contemporary cinema.
The Limelight section, IFFR’s section for highlights of the year in arthouse, which have already been released in theatres in The Netherlands.
Last but not least, the Cinema Regained section, a showcase reflecting on cinema history.
